Conférence « L’incroyable oubli de Jules Dumont », par Françoise Demougin- Dumont (19 mars 2019)

Mardi 19 mars Françoise Demougin-Dumont, à l’invitation de l’ADVR, nous a fait découvrir la figure d’un résistant important mais hélas lar- gement oublié par l’Histoire, Jules Dumont, son grand-père, au cours d’une intervention passionnante.

Cette démarche qui consiste à faire découvrir ou à faire mieux connaître des résistants est inscrite dans nos statuts et nous sommes heureux d’avoir redonné vie, à travers la présentation de Françoise Demougin, au parcours exceptionnel de Jules Dumont. Pour ceux qui n’ont pas eu la chance d’assister à cette conférence, je présenterai rapidement le personnage, mais on peut surtout le retrouver dans le livre de Françoise Demougin « La promesse de l’oubli » publié aux éditions Tirésias-Michel Reynaud, collection Visages.

Jules Dumont a participé à tous les conflits de la première moitié du 20° siècle, comme soldat d’abord, pendant son service militaire au Maroc, puis de 1914 à 1919 (car, membre de l’armée d’Orient, il n’est démobi- lisé qu’à la fin 1919), puis comme militant communiste.

Après la Grande guerre dont il sort avec le grade de capitaine, décoré de la Légion d’Honneur et de multiples médailles et citations, il part s’installer au Maroc. La situation faite aux Marocains par la colonisation le révolte et ce catholique autodidacte bascule peu à peu vers le mili- tantisme communiste. Ses prises de position contre le colonialisme lui valent d’être expulsé du Maroc, dégradé et déchu de toutes ses dis- tinctions. « L’affaire Dumont » est d’ailleurs à l’origine de la création du parti communiste marocain…

En 1935 Jules Dumont commence un combat antifasciste qu’il mènera jusqu’à son exécution par les Allemands en juin 1943. Il est alors en- voyé par le parti communiste français en Ethiopie, comme conseiller mi- litaire auprès du Négus en lutte contre l’invasion fasciste italienne. Dès 1936 il rejoint la lutte du peuple espagnol contre Franco. Après avoir di- rigé la centurie « Commune de Paris », il devient commandant de la 14° Brigade internationale, la « Marseillaise », avec le grade de colonel. Jules Dumont écrit beaucoup et c’est lui qui rédige le chant de lutte des volontaires français en Espagne.

Résistant de la première heure, il est à l’origine de la création, en oc- tobre 1941, de l’OS, l’Organisation spéciale qui donnera naissance aux FTP. Au printemps 1942, « le Vieux », « le colonel » ou « le colonel

Paul » comme on l’appelle (il a 55 ans!) est affecté par le PC à la direc- tion de la région du nord où la durée de vie est en moyenne de 4 mois. Il tombera le 4 novembre 1942. Torturé il ne parle pas . Condamné à mort, il est exécuté le 15 juin 1943 au Mont Valérien.

Il termine sa dernière lettre par ces lignes: « Je sais au moins pourquoi j’ai souffert et pourquoi je vais mourir. Tant d’autres meurent sans savoir pourquoi .»

Quant à l’oubli dont fut victime Jules Dumont, les pistes de réponse sont dans le livre de Françoise Demougin-Dumont…
