Le film évoque les différents aspects de la résistance des cheminots: aide aux fugitifs, renseignements, information par tracts, sabotages. La seconde partie du film développe le rôle clé tenu par la résistance fer au moment du Débarquement. Naturellement, le film aborde aussi le thème de la répression.
De 1944 à 1946 c’est le Comité de libération du cinéma français qui gère la production cinématographique. Le film de René Clément, sorti en février1946, est le premier film qui traite de la résistance ferroviaire.
