Lundi 3 avril l’ADVR a proposé une conférence donnée par Edouard Sill sur le thème : « les Brigades internationales dans la guerre d’Espagne, 1936-1939»
Edouard Sill, auteur d’une thèse sur les Brigades internationales, est naturellement un excellent connaisseur du sujet! Il nous a apporté un éclairage poussé sur la façon dont les Brigades ont prisnaissance. Il a évoqué le grand mouvement de solidarité spontanée apparu dès le coup d’Etatfranquiste du 18 juillet 36 contre le gouvernement de Front populaire qui a amené en Espagne descentaines de volontaires. Ces volontaires, inorganisés au début, ont rejoint le plus souvent les colonnes anarchistes. Mais, très vite, un mouvement structuré, encadré par le parti communiste français, après que Jacques Duclos ait obtenu l’autorisation de Staline, a succédé à ce premier mouvement. Le départ des volontaires a alors été encadré par le PCF, de même que leur accueil en Espagne sur la base d’Albacete. Là, sous le commandement d’André Marty, une rapide instruction militaire leur a été donnée avant de les envoyer, dès le début du mois de novembre, sur le front de Madrid.
Si plus de la moitié des volontaires des Brigades étaient Français, leurs rangs ont été grossis par des antifascistes venus de plus de 50 pays, anti-nazis allemands, anti-fascistes italiens, mais aussi tchèques, américains, anglais, etc. Parmi les figures connues qui ont rejoint les Brigades on peut citer Henri Rol-Tanguy, Louis Blésy, Jules Dumont, Arthur London, Lise London. En effet il y a eu de nombreuses femmes volontaires en Espagne républicaine, et Lise était secrétaire d’André Marty.
L’épopée des Brigades internationales symbolise la solidarité, mais aussi le courage et le sacrifice car, sur les 35 000 volontaires engagés, entre 10 et 15 000 ont perdu la vie dans les combats.
Certes, et Edouard Sill nous l’a rappelé, le poids militaire des Brigades est resté modeste par rapport celui de l’armée de la République, mais leur rôle symbolique a été très important. Elles ont été de tous les combats et, par exemple, la Brigade tchèque a perdu 100 % de ses effectifs, car elles ont souvent été engagées dans les secteurs les plus menacés du front.
Je me souviens de Rol-Tanguy qui, lors d’une conférence donnée au Lycée Hélène Boucher nous a raconté l’arrivée de la 11e Brigade à Madrid que les franquistes s’apprêtaient à investir. Les Brigadistes, en se rendant à la Cité universitaire, ont défilé dans la capitale espagnole où tous les volets étaient fermés car les madrilènes pensaient qu’il s’agissait des troupes fascistes. Mais quand les volontaires ont entonné l’Internationale, les volets se sont ouverts et les madrilènes sont descendus dans les rues pour les acclamer… et les franquistes ont été arrêtés à la porte de la ville. Madrid n’est tombée qu’en mars 1939, à la fin de la guerre civile.
Cependant, à cette date, les Brigades étaient parties depuis longtemps puisque le gouvernement républicain espagnol, au nom de la « non-intervention », avait demandé leur départ espérant que cela entraînerait celui des corps expéditionnaires de l’Allemagne nazie et de l’ Italien fasciste, cequi n’a évidemment pas été le cas. Les Brigades, elles, sont parties après un défilé émouvant dans Barcelone le 15 novembre 1938. Et on se souvient des mots de Dolorès Ibarruri, la Passionnaria, qui leur a dit « vous pouvez partir la tête haute, vous êtes l’Histoire, vous êtes la légende ».
Edouard Sill a évoqué enfin la situation difficile faite aux Brigadistes démobilisés, particulièrement aux étrangers internés dans des camps français, dont certains ne sortiront que pour rejoindre les camps de concentration allemands. Cependant, tous les Brigadistes qui le pourront rejoindront bientôt la Résistance en France, forts de leur expérience militaire, pour continuer leur combat antifasciste.
